Network Rail Upgrade Plan
Britain’s rail network is the fastest growing and most congested in Europe. In the last 20 years the number of people travelling on the network has doubled, meaning the trains, stations and platforms are dealing with more passengers than they were ever designed for. The Railway Upgrade Plan represents the biggest investment programme in the railways since Victorian times.
As the graphic designer I was responsible for creating hyper-localised executions across three major track sections Brighton Mainline, Midlands Mainline and ThamesLink to help passengers navigate their journeys during these upgrades and raising awareness of the benefits.
The Coastal Upgrade
On the Brighton Mainline the work was concentrated on a section of line between Three Bridges and Brighton and Three Bridges and Lewes. The campaign visuals were localised by the creation of Sammy the seagull, a flexible CGI character created by Smoke and Mirror’s London. The iconic gull was used across the entire upgrade executions as a charming and relevant spokesperson.
Derby Resignalling
The biggest investment in Derby’s railway – the Derby Resignalling Project – took place over 2 months. The work – included the remodelling of track and signalling systems, a new station platform and the extension of an existing footbridge.
As the lead designer I was responsible for designing way-finding signage, vinyls, digital screens, banners and print executions for passengers to easily navigate their way around Derby station to replacement bus services and also increase awareness of future planned disruptions during improvements.
Some examples of printed materials; posters, leaflets and signage created for the campaign to notify passengers of upcoming works and developments.
